A message from Superintendent Mark Speno

8-7-21

Good Afternoon Families of WSESD/U,

As I had stated in my introductory letter on July 28th I want to give you an update on the opening of our 2021-22 school year.

Our emphasis for the start of the school year continues to be on in-person learning five full days a week. More than ever I believe our children need their teachers and the structure that our schools provide for them.

After meeting with all of our school nurses and following the recommendations of the CDC, Vermont Department of Health, American Academy of Pediatrics and the VT Agency of Education we will start the school year with the requirement of universal masking for all students, staff and visitors whether vaccinated or not when inside our school buildings.

I know mask wearing can be a controversial topic for some but until we can assure that our school communities have vaccination rates above 80% we will continue to require them. Like anything, things can change quickly and I will be sure to give another update at some point during the week of August 23rd.

In the meantime please know that community vaccination clinics will be available at Academy School on August 16th from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and BUHS on August 25th from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., both clinics will be offered through the Vermont National Guard.

Thank you for your continued support and understanding as we continue to do our very best to support our children.

Sincerely,

Mark V. Speno

Interim Superintendent
